Between Oaks

Homestead & Animal Rescue

Sheltered by love.

A family homestead and animal rescue taking root in the oak bottomland outside Fordyce, Arkansas.

Our story

A home between two oaks

Two old oaks stand side by side in the creek bottom, the way Kenneth and Janie Shrum stood together for 63 years.

Kenneth has looked after these oaks for decades. They're still standing because he made sure of it.

Janie was an artist, a gardener, a baker, and a foster mom with an open door. Her favorite flower was the sunflower, so they grow at the feet of both oaks, turned toward the light.

Carrying it forward

Janie and Kenneth spent their lives growing things and making room for others, from their floral business and greenhouse to the children they welcomed into their home.

Now Tait and Andry are carrying that on. Between those two oaks they're building a home, a family, and a rescue for animals who need a soft place to land, with gardens to tend and a door that stays open.

The rescue

A soft place to land

We're just getting started. As the homestead grows, so will the room we have for animals who need a second chance.

Dogs and cats

Strays, drop-offs, and pets whose people can't keep them. Every one gets a name, a vet visit, and a story.

Barnyard friends

A coop, an aviary, and pasture for chickens and other farm animals as the land takes shape.

Wild neighbors

The deer and raccoons were here first. We plant and build so they can stay.
